Instrument Introduction

The NBS Smoke Density Chamber is widely used across industrial sectors for determining smoke generation from solid materials and assemblies mounted vertically within a closed chamber. This instrument measures the specific optical density of smoke generated when flat specimens up to 25 mm thick are exposed vertically to a radiant heat source of 25 kW/m², with or without pilot flame ignition.

This method effectively detects smoke density levels for plastic products, non-metallic materials in rail transit applications, marine industry materials, wire and cable products, and various other materials. Based on ASTM E662 and ISO 5659-2 standards, the chamber provides more accurate test results than traditional building material smoke density testers, utilizing precise photomultiplier tube optical sensors to capture subtle changes in flue gas content.
